Club Pylon Comps

I have been thinking about things we could do next year, and one of the options i thought of was a Club Pylon event (or events). I was thinking of making it a one type of model so that everyone has the same chance of winning and it comes down to pilot skill.

I would like to know your thoughts on this and any suggestions that you might have.

My thought was to go along the 400 sized brushed allowing a model to be built and ready to go for about £80. I have been asking questions about the place and have come up with an option.

SlipSo, this is a plan so would need building. its also a free plan for those that want it cheaper

Other options:
FunJet, this will be more expensive and would require a brushless motor.
E2K model, This will be even more expensive but would allow IC people to join in.

Let me know what you think and if there are any other options.

Edit: Once this is setup there would be nothing stopping people using it to test the speed of an EDF or any other model. We could even do a 400/450 class heli pylon race.

I think it would be a good idea to pick something cheap (e.g. brushed speed 400) and go with that.

if there is a launching issue then we can just do a time trial thing, each do a times run and see who comes out the fastest.

And as a support event we could have a 600 nitro figure 8 pilot race!!!!

So all the 600 nitro pilots are to run round in a figure of eight, it could be funny to see

I will be trying to get some more info on the models and find some rules that can be used. if anyone has any idea's of rules or would like to suggest any other models to look in to  then just shout, i would also like to know if anyone would be interested in joining in and building something to race.

We might get a bit off the wall sometimes but I dont think any of us are that mental!

Having read the RCMF thread, I note that there are (shall we say) strongly held opinions and well-defined expectations on the part of many enthusiasts.

Let me tell you where I am.

I'm happy to have a go at a club-level pylon comp.
Personally, I have no interest in progressing to faster pylon racing.
I'm not interested in an ARTF - doesn't push any of my buttons and it wouldn't get flown unless it was at a competition.
I'm not particularly interested in racing anything quick - it's only a bit of fun and you can have a perfectly good race at a relatively slow speed, as long as everyone is similarly slow.

For those reasons, I'd prefer the RCM&E Reno Racers but the Motor + Prop + ESC + Prop Driver costs over £90; what happened to the idea of a cheap racing class to have a bit of fun?

I realise that attitude would probably get me black-balled from the RCMF Pylon Special Interest Group (I'm sure they're all very nice people but it's blindingly apparent that you don't want to be seen as a dissenting voice), but you did ask...

I don't have any plans for faster pylon racing or taking it up properly, i just wanted something to get people out the wood work and flying for a bit of fun on a level field.  I am looking forward to the tri-club comp

I agree, the reno racers do look good but they would be costly.


If i was going to try and sort out the Slipso with a 2s 2100 and a 400 brushed motor, who would join in for a bit of fun?

The plans are free on-line, i was going to pop in to the post office in Windsor and see if they can print them (they have an A1 printer in there).

That sounds OK to me, provided that I can use a Hyperion G3 pack (can't be bothered waiting over an hour for a charge).

If there's enough of us, and if we can find a big-enough workshop, maybe we could try a mass build?

Sounds good to me... Perhaps use this as an evening club "Talk" find a location and just build as a group.

For this idea to appeal to more than a couple of members we need to keep it cheap and simple.  Settling on one airframe and 400 brushed motor would be a good idea.  Leave the other factors to the flyer like battery types?  A group build sounds interesting too.

Just another option on this theme, Could we say you are limited to a 20a speed controller, and the competition is how many laps you can complete in a certain time, probably 15min. the rest is up to you. A bit like the weight lift comp with a 40 ic
