Tail dragger or tricycle undercarrige?
« on: March 19, 2010, 10:43:49 »
Which is best as I have either option with the Wot and being a trainer aircraft is it better to have tricycle undercarrige while learning or a tail dragger. I always thought that the tail dragger was harder to taxi, take off and land but with the tricycle is our flying patch a problem with grass etc.

Cheers

Mike,

Go with a tail dragger - more durable and versatile at our patch. WOT 4s get off the ground so easily you'll have no problem with the ground handling. Plus if you move on to anything more advanced, low winger, warbird, aerobat etc chances are it will be a tail dragger.
Make it idiot-proof and someone will make a better idiot.

Cheers Russ.....

I have a Wot 4 deluxe that I got for xmas with a ASP 61 to go in it but today i picked up a Wot trainer from Slough rc models many thanks to John :boxing_smiley: who got hold of one within the day for me. Now i am going to build the Wot trainer first and plan on using a os 46fx. So like the Wot4 best to go with the tail dragger. So I assume that a tricycle is easier but the tail dragger is harder to learn but in the long run the best way to go.

This is a fiasco, every time I try and post, I get a session timed out message !!!  >:( >:( >:(

I give up!

Summary of original message was
1. Fuel tank might be a bit high in the WOT Trainer - if in doubt, suggest moving it.
2. Get a good idle and a low-pitch prop (e.g. 11x6), otherwise it'll be inclined to float on landing.
3. Other than that, I think you'll be pleased with it - they groove nicely.

Once I get it running I take it that if the fuel tank is a bit high I will get flooding problems etc?

Yep, and it won't idle properly. Pick-up might be a bit dodgy as well.

Basically - and it seems to depend on the carb type - the fuel tank centreline should either be level with the carb spraybar, or a little bit (maybe 5-10mm) below. The engine manual will have details.
