Dad has bought a World Models Tucano 60.

It has been sitting in my room for the last couple of months, he saw the reviews in Q&EFI and RCM&E and decided he had to have one.

He has stated today that over the Chrismas holiday he would like to get it built with my help. When this does get built i will get some photo's of his build.

Just to start here are some teasers.

The build has started.

As with all builds, you start by reading the instructions

. The instructions say to start on the wing. so here is the first mod i made to the motor box

The firewall has blind nuts installed which will work perfectly for the supplied engine mount if you wanted to make if smelly

but as we are going electric a little modification was needed. the holes at the bottom needed to be moved to match the mount. To do this i put an allen key in to the hole, bigger then then 4mm bolt but smaller then the hole in the wood and gave it a smack. There was no need for the smack as they were not held in well at all.

The motor is an AXI 4120-18. I had an A50 motor mount sitting about and looked in to modifying that to fit but it was going to be lots of work and was going to get messy. we popped in to West London Models and they sorted us out with an A60 mount. this needed the holes to be drifted by 1/2 a hole rather then just under a whole hole. To get the length for the cowl we have had to mount the motor on the front of the box (but have added the rear mounting bracket to provide support to the cage). The mount was too short if the motor was put in it and too long if put on the front so i have cut the mount down to allow it to fit.

While the motor was being done up i attacked the wing, The servo covers on this model seem to be the best part so far

. The are painted to match the covering and are made of plastic, the slot for the arm is pre-cut and the servo just slots straight in no issues.

You can see the colour from the image below, these are now fixed in place with servo savers installed to stopthem from becoming disconnected.

It is about this time in the instructions that i should glue the wing together. I put the wing spar in and there was lots of play, Its now glued in place and while gluing the wing was supported to provide the correct dihedral and tape was added to the joint to stop any from getting on to the covering or just escaping.

While the wing was drying i looked at the nose wheel. I am not impressed with the nose wheel retract, it doesn't have a positive lock. I will be talking with the supplier about this in the morning.

Then put the motor on the front end, looking good now.

Urm... I haven't got there yet

. I started building it for dad and he then lost interest in it so it went down the garrage so i could work on some of my other projects.

I will see if i can grab it out and see what i had in mind. When i build something i have a fixed idea on where things are going to go and how they are going to work so I'm sure i had a plan i just cant remember it in the office.

I will let you know and update the build once i get it going again.

This could be a solution. The author used only 4 cells but in the article he said that there is space also for 6 cells

Thanks for those photo's. It seems that the battery hatch is a good idea, i will see what i can come up with as I'm not a fan of having to remove the soft canopy, i think it could end up broken.

My thought was to take the wing off to get at the flight pack. This should give me a bit more room to put it in and where its going to go. the hatch would be a good idea to save the wing having to come off every time.

The model was retrieved from storage earlier today. With Simon's help we managed to get a lot done.

The motor is fully fitted and spinning in the right direction
The retracts are working as is the nose steering cowl is fitted.
Wings are connected and all servos are installed and working (Ailerons need a bit more work)
All servos in the fuz are installed but not all of them are connected.

Still to do:
Glue snake outer for nose wheel steering,
Rudder snake,
Elevator snake,
ailerons,
glue the tail surfaces on,
glue the extra bits of stabs on,
work out the battery mounting system,
Balance,
Set throws to the max,
Fly.

A couple of evenings work should see it done.

I might fly it on the 6s 2600s that i have for the 500 or Simon has offered me the use of a 6s 5000.

Will be great to see this one flying. It should look really good in the air - esp with the retracts.

The bigger planes are definitely easier to work on than the smaller ones.

Wouldn't mind havng a fly of it myself - something like this would be a good next step for me I think - bigger, not foam and aerobatic.....

As Simon says (there's a song there somewhere), this one should be worth seeing.

It'll be interesting to see how the retracts stand up to the patch...

Ok, the build continued on Saturday and lots of time was spent on the model doing lots of bits but as you can see from the list below not much has been done. The Pilots didn't like sitting still and kept jumping about the place, they are now stuck on with epoxy rather then double sided tape as suggested.

Wheel covers have been added, battery bay was created and glued in (needs some reinforcement). Simon ran all the control snakes and adjusted the servos so they now work with the push rods but we didn't glue the surface or mount the horns.

Additionally done over the weekend:
work out the battery mounting system,

Set controls throws to the max mmmm - these are known in the trade as ''Gareth Rates'' If I'm going to have a fly of this - any chance of checking the instruction booklet thingy - u know - those bits of paper in the box labelled ''Instructions'' and setting up a rate based on recommended throws (ie ''Simon Rates'' )
